Preventing low memory problems

If a team does not have enough for all actions trying to perform memory, it may happen that Windows and running programs are blocked. To prevent information loss, Windows warns you when the team little free memory remains. In addition, you can learn to recognize the symptoms of low memory and take appropriate actions to prevent the problem.

What are the symptoms of low memory?

Some signs that little free memory left are underperforming, notifications low or insufficient memory and display problems. For example, if you try to open a menu in a program when your computer is low on memory, the program may respond slowly or may appear unresponsive. When the menu appears, it may not respond when you try to click an item or may not all elements appear. If you click a menu item, it can also happen that the menu disappear and leave a blank area on the screen instead of displaying the contents of the document or file in which you are working.

Why do low memory problems occur?

The computer has two types of memory, random access memory (RAM) and virtual memory. All programs use RAM, but when there is not enough RAM for the program is run, Windows temporarily moves information that would normally be stored in RAM to a file on the hard disk called a paging file. The amount of information that is temporarily stored in a paging file is also known as virtual memory. The use of virtual memory (ie, moving information to the paging file and from it) enough free RAM for programs to run properly.

The low memory problems occur when your computer runs out of RAM and is low on virtual memory. This can occur when more programs that can support the RAM installed on the computer running. The low memory problems can also occur when a program does not free memory you no longer need. This problem is called memory overuse or memory loss .

How to prevent low memory problems?

Run fewer programs can simultaneously prevent low memory problems and information loss. It's a good idea to look at which programs show signs of low memory conditions, to try not to run them at a time.

However, it is not always convenient or practical to run a limited number of programs. Symptoms of low memory can indicate that the computer needs more RAM to process the programs used. Then some recommendations to solve or prevent low memory problems are offered:

  • Increase the size of the paging file (virtual memory)

Windows tries to automatically increase the size of the paging file the first time the team falls short memory, but can also be manually increased to a maximum size that is determined by the amount of RAM installed. Although increasing the paging file size can help prevent low memory problems, it can also cause programs to run more slowly. Since the computer reads information from RAM much faster than a hard disk (where the paging file is), when programs are much virtual memory function more slowly.

For more information, see Change the size of virtual memory .

  • Install more RAM

If you notice symptoms of low memory or if Windows warns you of a problem of insufficient memory, check the information that came with your computer or contact the manufacturer to determine which type of RAM is compatible with your computer, and install more RAM. To install RAM, check the information provided by the manufacturer.

For more information, see Find out how much RAM your computer .

  • Determine if a program makes extensive use of memory.

If your computer is low on memory if certain programs are running, it is possible that some of these programs have a memory leak. To stop a memory leak, you need to close the program. To repair a memory leak, check for updates of the program or contact the software manufacturer.

To determine the program that uses more memory, follow these steps:

    1. To open Task Manager, click with the right mouse button on the taskbar and then click Start Task Manager .

    2. Click the tab Processes .

    3. To sort programs by memory usage, click Memory (Private Working Set) .

You can also find errors in programs and information about troubleshooting Event Viewer.

    1. To open Event Viewer, click the button StartPicture of the Start button in Control Panel , System and Security , Administrative Tools , and then click Event Viewer .  If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Administrator permission required

    2. In the left pane, click Applications and Services Logs to view error events. For a description of the problem, double-click the event. To check information available to solve the problem, look for a link to online help.
