Whenever you want, you can make a manual backup. To do this, go to Settings> iCloud
In the next screen, click scroll to the bottom and click on "Storage & Backup".
Once inside storage and copies, give the option "Backup Now".
To back up iCloud automatically checks that:
Your device is connected to the wireless
Your device is plugged in
The screen is locked
Just make sure the "Copy iCloud" option is enabled as shown in the picture. This is the same screen that you would access to a backup manually.
