1: How to access the router configuration

Continuing our tutorial "How to discover if your neighbor is stealing WiFi you."

The first step is that we will see how to access the router, and to change various configuration parameters and make our security improves, to prevent intruders can take advantage of our WiFi connection.

Access your Internet browser and type in the address bar 192.168.1.1. The IP address mentioned above corresponds to the default gateway and is usually in most cases we provide.

In case you have difficulty accessing this form, open a command prompt window, by looking in Windows cmd.exe and type ipconfig parameter. Next, look at the value of the IP address that appears as the default gateway. This will then be the address you need to enter in the address bar of the browser.

Now is the time to enter your username and password to access the router. Some routers use a combination of username / password predefined by ISP. You may need to contact your Internet access provider or check the manual that shipped with the router you.

2: Your own password to access the router

If someone knows your public IP address, it would not be difficult if you use a login / password preset by the operator of the Internet, could easily access our router and modify your configuration completely jeopardizing our security.

That is why, once we have agreed to the configuration of our router, we will establish our own password. So we headed in our case on a LinkSys router from Cisco, the Administration / Management section (which vary depending on the router model) and Router Password introduce your new password below confirm it and finally chose down completely Save Settings.

Also, if you do not want to access the router remotely, we can choose the Disable Remote Management option.

3: Choose WPA2 encryption and change the WiFi password

WPA2 is an encryption method to secure wireless connections. Its purpose is to correct the vulnerabilities that have been detected in WPA. It is also based on the new 802.11i standard. With WPA2, they are generating new keys from which we introduce that the other teams are transmitted, complicating the task of deciphering our WiFi key.

For all these reasons, WPA2 encryption protocol that we recommend to be used on today's safest. As we recommend choosing algorithm WPA TKIP + AES, again for their safety. It is important, though, that all of our wireless devices are compatible with this mode. Other mechanisms such as WEP encryption are easy to "break" for various programs designed to uncover passwords for WiFi networks.

Also changes the password for the WiFi connection that you were assigned by default. Choose one that is difficult to figure out.

4: Beware the SSID

The network identifier or SSID known as defaults was provided also should be changed. Some companies providing Internet access have been discovered as the key generator algorithm of some models of routers, thus achieving the SSID from the router password (which came by default).

5: Restricts access filtering by MAC

The MAC is a hexadecimal address that uniquely identifies (at least in theory) to each device that accesses the Internet. We could establish a similarity between the MAC of a device that travels over the Internet and enrollment in a car traveling down the road.

If at home we have located the devices that connect to the Internet regularly: the motive for dad, mom, notebook from our parents and our own mobile, for example, locating the MAC key and applying a filter for that address, only these devices can access the WiFi connection. It is one of the safest ways to have the practical certainty that no foreign access to our connection. If you need to find the MAC address of a device orientation on how you do it (steps 4, 5, 6 and 7).

As for the application of a filter by MAC, in the case of our router we headed to Wireless / Wireless MAC Filter and we chose Enable (activate) filtering. Then we decided that we want to allow only those devices listed. To access the list we selected the Edit MAC Filter List option. We have been introduced one by one the MAC addresses of each device and have finally saved the changes.
