After connecting via USB and the message "Connected as an installer" on the screen of your phone, make sure that you are the phone is not in the lock screen and slide down from the top (or at least on my device Verizon) can access the parameters "USB PC Connection" tab "ongoing". Check one of two options, MTP or PTP. This would be the same drop down where it would quickly alter various settings, see downloads and be able to link the recent notifications.
