I have had this problem on my Galaxy 5. I went to disable Google+ but it asks to resort to factory version so won't disable.Any ideas please?  Have cleared my cache but still not working. Thanks in advance
by
Disabled Google+ on my Droid Razr Maxx HD on Verizon and problem appears resolved. Thanks so much for that!
by
Yes, if you choose to uninstall updates and go back to factory version, it will still disable. Once it does that it uninstalls, and only option for that app is to enable. This solves the problem.

I have a moto G and I keep having the same problem with my contacts stop responding...How do I fix it?
by
Did the same on my Droid Razr M.  .

Hi guys..... i also have same problem i changed android omega rom. I did format but unfortunately, contacs has stopped :((((((( i dnt use my mobile

UnInstalling the updates to the Google+ app fixed my issue with "Unfortunately, contacts has stopped" popup every time I called someone. But, the problem came right back of couese next time the updater ran. You have to disable auto updates. That is in the Google Play app on the Google + app page. Push the 3 vertical dots and then uncheck the "auto update" box. Hope this helps.
by
Google+ was the issue.  Fixed it on all 3 phones that I was having a problem with.  Droid Maxx and Droid Mini.  Disable Google+ and you are good to go.

1. Clear Cache and Data

Try clearing the temporary storage area of your Contacts using these steps:

  • Go to Settings
  • Proceed to Application Manager
  • Select the All tab
  • Choose Contacts
  • Tap Clear Cache

Selecting Clear Data is optional since this will erase all the changes that you have made to some of your Phone app’s settings but it may solve the problem based on some users who have tried it.

  • Go back to the previous menu and choose Phone
  • Tap Clear Cache and Clear Data

2. Change Date Format

  • Go to Settings
  • Select More
  • Under Date and Time, change the format to 24 hours

3. Delete Rogue Apps

Start your phone under Safe Mode, observe if the problem occurs. If not, there is probably a third-party app causing the bug. Exit Safe Mode and try to recall the most recent app that you have installed prior to the problem. Disable it for a while to test whether the error still comes out.

4.Syncs your accounts one to one

We enter Contacts -> Settings -> Contacts -> Accounts and tested those accounts with automatic synchronization, the synchronized automatically to see if, at the time of synchronization, some fails.

If fails in this case would be a good idea to delete and re-add it, it does not take long unless your Google account.

5. Factory Reset

If these insturctions won't solve your problem, then disable google+ app. also

(thanks nachito)

I have a Metro LG MS500 and have been getting the error message: unfortunately, com.android.contacts has stopped, I have disabled google+ and done a factory reset.  I can't save contacts, I can't call out, I can't get in my contact app.  Ready to go into a store and see if they can fix it, but thought I'd try here first.
by
Hye..which step did you use? I use galaxy prime too..try disable google+ but doesn't work..

I did all of the above sometimes twice, stopped Google +, removed battery twice, reset phone, twice, turned off and restarted numerous times,  on my Galaxy 5.  Finally, the remove the voice mail did the trick.  Thanks for all the helps.  Saves a lot of time going to the Verizon store for me.

How did you it?? Please help..

by
works even for micromax. thanks.
by
did the clear cache a few reboots including a couple full battery removals. I tried "uninstalling updates" to G+ and "stopping" plus reboots but the error continued. It didn't clear the problem. Got the error and my dial pad and contacts slammed shut. Not able to call out. Then I took an incoming call that lasted more than 5 minutes and the problem magically went away. Weird. I've rebooted a couple times since and all is working normally. Hmmm. I'll repost if anything changes. -(Skipper on droid forums posted this).

It worked for me. Had a friend call me for 2 minutes and the problem went away.

My happened to me the same. Researching I realized that one of the things that happened is that the whatsapp took me horrors to open. At higher he had a high battery consumption. So I did this and has fixed the problem:

- Go into accounts. Of all that you may have (especially whatsapp I think it is responsible) desactivad contact synchronization.

- Then id to Settings -> Applications -> All. Pursue called contacts and cleanse the data.

- Then go back to activad accounts and the synchronization of contacts that you might have.

Holy hand, I did yesterday afternoon and ended in whastapp lag, notices of detainees contacts and excessive battery consumption.

you and me describe.

If u disabled Google + wouldn't that cause it to not back up new stuff added to phone? And it u "clear data" does that delete any contacts or anything like that? I always get nervous doing stuff like that. Don't want to lose anything on my phone. Thanks.

Hi.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 and when I go into Contacts and try and import my contacts from Sim to Device/Google/Samsung/Outlook, it lets me select my contacts but when it goes to transfer is says the annoying message "Unfortunately, Contacts has stopped".
I have followed all the advice above by disabling Google+, I even deleted my account, I have cleared Cache and Data for it, I have taken the battery out, the sim and the SD card out, I have sorted the time issue out, I have cleared cache in phone, etc and still, I cannot use this Import function to get my contacts onto my device.
My hands free in my car reads contacts from my device so I need to have them on there, but can't get them to transfer which is becoming very annoying now.
Can someone please help me, perhaps there is something I have missed and have done wrong, I don't know, but I don't know what else to try!
by
Many thanks! The key is obviously disabling Google+. This enabled me to reinstate my contacts (whew!) Google+ has NOT been reinstated (didn't use it anyway). This was on an ALCATEL PIXI 3. Android 5.1. A cup of coffee at least to you!

Had this problem on My Samsung Galaxy s5 with Android 5 (all updated). Tried restarting, tried disabling google+, turning off wifi, and more. What helped me, and this could just be random, was to use my voice option, "ok Google," to call out. Once I made a couple of calls that way I messed around with contacts while on a call. Everything worked fine while in the call. Then after hanging up I messed around a bit more to see if I get the same error. Finally I closed out all my apps, opened up my phone app, no error message. Like I said, it's probably random, might not work for everyone, but it worked for me. Hope this helps.
by
I had similar problem. The "Contacts" kept crashing saying it had stopped. Moreover, as soon as I would make a call, my screen would go black (just AS IF I had put my phone to my ear) and then it would just stay that way, so I couldn't even hang up!! I though it was because of issues with the the proximity sensor, since that's what many people suggest online, but since I disabled the google+ app, every thing has been back to normal. The contacts is not crashing and my screen doesn't just stay black during a call.  Thank you so very much everyone!

I cannot dial a number on my galaxy s5
by
Finally!!! Thank you very much shad moore!
I have tried every possible fix on my note 3 (UK version). I have tried google+, clearing all cache for all apps, formatting cache partition from boot menu, getting into safe mode, even disabling and then re-enabling phone and contacts apps, multiple phone restarts, getting the battery out and many other fixes that I have found on various forums and nothing worked, I constantly had 'contacts has stopped' message as soon as I have tried to open 'Phone' icon.
And then finally making a one call using Google Voice fixed my problem!!! After that I was able to finally enter number manually and make a call. The only issue was that when I went to 'Logs' section it crashed every time I tried to scroll my last phone calls list - easy fix - cleared that list (had about 600 last calls saved there), now made a few more calls just to see if problem will come back and its fine now and can even scroll the list of last calls without isuue.
Thank you VERY MUCH again as I was just about to break my phone. And just to let you all know this error came up today and I had no problems before, haven't done any app updates recently and the last OS update (to lollipop) has been done several weeks back.
by
not sure how you figured this out, but thank u. the only thing that worked!!!

I have tried all nachitos advice but did not work. Then i clear call log or call history and it works.
by
I have tried ALL of the above. I have spent over 3 hours [of my life I will never get back] in chat with 3 different Samsung reps/agents. The factory reset cost me apps & ring/notifications tones, some I have bought that I cannot get back. Nothing has worked. After receiving and/or making a call that annoying message -  Unfortunately, Contacts has stopped  -  Very, very frustrating.
by
Hey Steven G thanks..I tried everything but it dint work, then I clear my calls log and voila..it worked! was about to crash my tab4 too..

Galaxy S6 - nothing works...uninstalled/disabled Google+, cleared cache, tried to transfer contacts...seemingly everything.  I can see they are on the phone, but the contacts button does not work.  Every time I think I've moved the contacts (in settings/applications/contacts) I can see them and try to save in folder "phone contacts", nothing happens.
There are four locations set up AT&T, gmail, phone contact, and phone storage.  I've tried to go to each location and nothing works.  If anyone has this figured out please post.

Have Samsung Galaxy S3.  Everything seems to work EXCEPT I cannot edit a contact to add groups.  I get the hated message every time.  I have tried all of the suggestions, but nothing has worked.  Since this happens on many brands/models, it is time for google to get to work.
by
I have a Galaxy S5. Tried all the prescribed fixes and none worked.  Called my S5 from another cell phone and instead of answering I selected the "I'm in a meeting" message and ignore call.

Contacts and the Phone app are all working perfectly fine. Go figure!
by
Clear out old messages in VoiceMail.  Apparently there's an issue with a software update the caused a glitch with the use of the phone keypad.  After you clear out old voicemails, reboot.  Just worked for me.
by
Thanks Randy, problem solved,I uninstalled Google + and cleared cache and rebooted too many times to count, immediate resolution
by
Randy went through the whole list and nothing worked, until i saw what you said about voicemail. Many thanks to you for giving me the answer I so desperately needed. If you are ever in Iowa the drinks are on me.
by
Me, too!  Finally! Thanks so much for this tip. I really, really hate these random glitches and the amount of time spent trying to guess what might be causing the problem.  Clearing voicemails wouldn't have occurred to me!  Appreciate the help!!

Problem often arises with the contact, gallery and home applications, among many others. For example, whenever I get the error "Unfortunately contact has stopped " on my Galaxy S3 and is especially annoying. The procedure to solve this problem is usually always the same.

SOLUTION:
. First, you must navigate to the configuration of your Android smartphone
. Scroll down until you see the Application Manager or apps, the name varies depending on the Android device
Swipe left to find the tab 'All' applications.
Scroll to the application being stopped and click on it.
This will clear the data and cache.

The thing to understand is that cleaning the data, changes made in the application settings are deleted, but not the actual content, like images from the Gallery application, for example. Cleaning the cache will get rid of the saved data that allow applications to load much faster when booting. Deleting this only slowly opening up an application a bit, but will also help solve the problem.

tried all the above and didn't work for me.   I was finally able to resolve the problem after deleting all voice mails from "visual voice mail" app (v3.8.31).

Thanks for the tips.  My Samsung  S 6 was not allowing me to access contact list.  Uninstalling Google + and disabling auto updates fixed the problem!

This problem is caused from the means the Contact was transferred(Bluetooth) to the Device.

The solution is simple, Export contact to your device storage, Delete all contact on Phone and Import back the contact to the Device...Problem Solved
