all day trying to get it out and I can not and do not want to restore because I have no backup: (

Try to let down the power button and the home for about 10 seconds and force a restart. 
If it still goes back to recovery mode, you might have iCloud backup (if not on the computer) the last time the mobile computer (or wifi to iCloud) can log into.

Sorry, to me the same thing happened to me a few days ago, it seems that is a problem in the last update on the iPhone 4. After all morning with tech support, the only solution was to connect it to iTunes. I detected in recovery mode and had to restore. THIS TIME I had a backup ... Once you lose all the data you mind having a copy in the cloud. Good luckM
