How to boot Zte Blade III in safe mode?

Hold the power button on your phone.
Hold down the Shut Down option until a dialog box appears.
Press OK to restart in Safe Mode.

In my situation it seems impossible to long press the 'Shut Down' option due to the relentless pop up error message that masks it. Difficult enough to just get it pressed once. Really poor design fault! Any alternative solutions?
