With a simple drip or an uninterrupted flow of water, a leak on your flush can lead to overconsumption of up to 150 liters per day!

But do not panic ! It is very easy to fix this type of leak yourself without having to call a plumber.

Want to know how to fix a leak in your toilet flush? Our HomeServe expert will guide you step by step by giving you all the tips for repairing a leaking toilet flush.

Repairing a toilet flush leak: what is your situation?

When you notice a leak on your flush , start by determining its origin to find out how to intervene later.

You have two options:

  • A float valve problem
  • A problem with the bell and the water release system.

How to Fix a Leaking Toilet Flush Caused by a Float Valve Problem in 4 Steps

1 - Check the float valve of your flush

Open the lid of your toilet flush tank. If water is escaping through the overflow pipe, it is because the float valve of your toilet flush is malfunctioning: its mechanism is certainly blocked by limescale.

2 - Unblock the float valve

Try to maneuver the float valve of your flush to unblock it, but be careful not to force: the parts are very fragile.

3 - Check the condition of your float valve valve

If you are unable to unblock the float valve of your flush , check the condition of the valve. If you notice that it is worn, it will have to be changed.

4 - Disassemble and descale the valve of your float valve

The valve of the float valve of your flush is in good condition but very calcified? Take it apart and soak it for several hours in a descaling liquid like white vinegar.

How to repair a toilet flush leak following a bell or flushing system problem in 7 steps:

1 - Descale your flush valve

Is the water flowing through the toilet flush valve? It may just be scale that is preventing the seal.

After turning off the water and flushing the toilet, empty two liters of white vinegar into your tank. You have to put pressure on the bell so that the vinegar does not leak into the bowl. Be patient, the operation can take up to an hour.

When finished, brush the inside of the flush to remove scale waste. Then, put the water back on and activate your flush.

2 - The water flows outside and inside the bowl: dismantle your flush tank

Is water flowing outside and inside the bowl? The plastic nut of the bell may be loose or the gasket needs to be changed.

In both cases, we are going to explain to you how to disassemble your toilet flush .

3 – Unscrew the water inlet valve and remove the float valve

Close the water inlet tap and flush the toilet.

Be careful not to twist the tubing when loosening the valve ring using two wrenches, then remove the float valve.

4 – Remove your flush tank

Unscrew the two wing nuts that hold your tank, and lift it: you can then simply empty the tank of your flush .

5 – Check the tightness of the seal ring

First check to be carried out: is the large seal ring tight? If it is not, tighten it with your toilet key or pliers.

6 – Change the seal if necessary

Check that the seal located between the tank and the bowl is in good condition: if it is damaged, change it.

7 – Raise the cistern of your flush

Raise the tank of your flush, put your flush in water then activate it to check if there is still a leak.

If the water leak persists, do not hesitate: change the entire mechanism of your flush . It's a simple operation, and you'll have peace of mind for many years.
