If your iPhone is running iOS 4.x and lower, then the method from another answer is practically redundant, since apps are not compatible with that version of iOS and iCloud did not exist back then. In the occasion, iTunes can help you sync iPhone contacts to Gmail.

1. Download and launch iTunes. Then connect your iPhone to the computer.

2. Open the device summary page. And Click the Info tab.

3. Check “Sync Contacts With” and then select “Google Contacts”.

4. Type your Google account’s username and password. And click Apply.

The first step, sync contacts with iCloud, then export iPhone contacts to computer through Google web browser, open the site of icloud.com, then sign in with your iCloud account. Click "Contacts" and hit the settings icon and choose "Export vCard" to save contacts from iphone  on your computer. Lastly, import contacts from computer to Gmail.  Log in your Gmail account and click "Contacts" in the left sidebar. Here, you can click "More" option and then choose "Import" > "Choose File" to find and import vCard file on your desktop computer.
