To perform a clean startup in Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Run, type msconfig and click OK.
- On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then clear the following check boxes:
Process SYSTEM.INI File
Process WIN.INI file
Load Startup Items
- On the Services tab, select the check box Hide all Microsoft services, and then click Disable All.
- Click OK, and then click Restart to restart the computer.

- Click the Services tab, check the Hide all Microsoft services, and then click Disable All.
- Click OK, and then click Restart.
- Run Windows Update or Microsoft Update. If the update does not run successfully, go to Method 4.
